What is Pet Insurance?

What is pet insurance all about?

Is pet insurance a guarantee that the animal you buy is healthy? Not in this instance. If you do buy a puppy from a pet shop then there may be a warranty that the puppy will be in good health for a set time period. We do ask at TurnersTips that you consider not buying a puppy but look at adopting from the local SPCA if possible. There are so many puppy mills operating in North America that this is one step you might take to help shut them down.

The pet insurance we will discuss is for your animal and could help pay for vaccinations, prescriptions, necessary surgeries and more. Let's consider a few types of pets and what medical needs they could face as they go from that butterball of a baby to a mature animal.

Dog Pet Insurance

It seems some of the fancier breeds of dogs are prone to health problems. We know large breeds can have hip displacia and some of the very miniatures are prone to congestion. At the very minimum you will have some of the below listed veterinary needs:

  • Vaccination with follow-up booster shots
  • Neuter or spay
  • Injuries from other animals, objects
  • Eating something they should not
  • Dental - cleaning and disease

  • Cancer
  • Arthritis
  • Heart Disease
  • X-rays
  • Euthanasia

Cat Pet Insurance

Cats have their own special illnesses that can strike quickly and if not treated right away then the cat is not likely to survive. Some of the concerns that are particular to cats include:

  • Feline infectious enteritis
  • Feline distemper
  • Vaccinations
  • Abcesses
  • Dental problems
  • Cankers
  • Stings and bites
  • Colds
  • Bladder problems
  • Stomach disorders
  • Fleas or skin infections
  • Hairballs
  • Ring worms and other types of intestinal worms
  • Eye disorders
  • X-rays

Pet insurance for a gerbil? I know of a real-life example when our friend's young daughter decided to play "Super Dave" with her gerbil. The little girl had cut a ping pong ball in half to make a helmet and put in on the gerbil. She managed to get the gerbil on a miniature motorcycle and shoved it off a ramp. It did not turn out well. Our friend and her daughter raced to the veterinarian to have the gerbil examined. When the prognosis was expensive surgery it finally hit our friend that this was a very expensive process she could not afford. The gerbil underwent euthanasia to relieve it of the pain it was suffering. The daughter had a long talk with her mom about "do not try this at home" and their next pet was a dog. They purchased pet insurance.

You need to do some research when buying pet insurance. There can be restrictions as to the age of the animal and limits to the coverage. Ask questions and shop around. Read the fine print. As your broker or agent if they have a pet insurance company to offer and what are the limitations and exclusions on the policy.
