Warming vehicles stolen in winter

Winnipeg car thieves wish list

After a weekend of damage and death involving stolen Hummers in Winnipeg there is talk about what vehicles the thieves will target next. There was an accident where a vehicle was hit by a Hummer resulting in a death. The same weekend another Hummer was stolen and driven erratically around parts of Winnipeg which resulted in more car accidents.

Manitoba Public Insurance has a program in place to reduce theft. One of the requirements is that those vehicles most often stolen must have an approved, non-factory installed immobilizer device. This is not required of the Hummer models in Manitoba. The police do warn that though the weather is now frigid in Winnipeg, leaving the vehicle unoccupied while it warms up makes it a prime target for thieves.

The Hummer is a popular target south of the border. The Hummer H2 is listed only second to the Cadillac Escalade by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the U.S. A Hummer is about 50% heavier then most vehicles, the H2 is listed at almost 3,000 kilograms.
