A volunteer is a person who does volunteer work for which they receive little or no earnings. You can be a volunteer firefighter, a volunteer on a condominium corporation board or a volunteer at your local food bank.

Some of the insurance companies now offer liability coverage for volunteers as long as they are not medical professionals. You could ask your agent or broker to confirm if you have this coverage and if not, how you would get it.

You should check to see if the organization you are helping does have insurance in force to protect the volunteers. The people who are in charge of others, even as a volunteer themselves, are subject to liability claims from a Human Rights violation.
