Unemployment insurance for self-employed

The times are changing

The Canadian federal government recently introduced a bill that would extend Employment Insurance (EI) benefits. Now the self-employed will be able to claim, and this would include parental, maternity, sickness and compassionate care benefits.

The Human Resources Minister Diane Finley stated that self-employed Canadians, should not have to choose between their family and their business responsibilities.

Finley says that this move, is one of the most significant enhancements to the EI program in the last decade.

The program will be that the self-employed can voluntarily opt into the EI program. They would receive the same special benefits now available to salaried employees. This could affect up to 2.6 million self-employed Canadians.

With the recent economic downturn, there have been many changes to the EI structure. We will have to watch and see if the bill does become law.
