Serious Conviction

Serious is requiring effort or concentration; complex and not easy to answer or solve. In regards to automobile insurance there is minor, serious and major convictions. Some of the convictions that could be regarded as being serious could include:

  • fail to remain at scene of accident;
  • driver fails to report an accident;
  • improper passing in playground or school zone;
  • drives a motor vehicle during a prohibited period of time;
  • for the graduated license or novice driver - presence of alcohol suspension;
  • speeding in playground or school zone;
  • general speeding in excess of speed limit by more than 50 kph;
  • speed in a construction zone in excess of speed limit by more than 50 kph;
  • speed - passing emergency vehicle - in excess of speed limit by more than 50 kph;
  • speed at a flashing yellow light crossing in excess of speed limit by more than 50 kph;
  • careless driving;
  • racing;
  • driving on a wager or bet;
  • fail to stop for a school bus;
  • drive while unauthorized;
  • fail to stop for a vehicle carrying explosives, at uncontrolled railway crossing or a school bus;
  • fail to stop for a peace officer


Many of the insurance companies charge an automatic 15% surcharge for third party liability and collision when you have on of these convictions.
