PEI recognizes same sex marriage

The three year wait is over! The changes giving same sex couples on Prince Edward Island all the rights enjoyed by mixed sex couples has been proclaimed by the province.

A marriage commissioner on P.E.I. has been able to perform same sex marriages since June 2006. The legislation was not all amended and many items still referred to married couples as "man and woman" or "husband and wife."

The more gender neutral terms are now in place with the Domestic Relations Act. The changes affected 29 different piecesof legislation and now are all amended.

Insurance policies recognize same sex couples for their rights as the same as a traditional husband and wife couple.
