Owner Operator

An owner operator in respect to commercial auto insurance is the term used to describe a subcontractor who provides one or more power units (and sometimes trailers) to a trucking company.

The owner operator may drive the vehicle themselves. They may hire drivers if they own multiple units. If the owner operator does not have owned trailers then non-owned trailer coverage will be required f the owner operator is purchasing the required insurance.

Where an owner/operator operates exclusively for a trucking company, the ownership is often registered jointly, with the plates being registered to the trucking company. In this situation the insurance will be carried under the name of the trucking company.

With large numbers, usually referred to as a fleet, the pricing can be less than an owner operator will be able to obtain when purchasing insurance for one to a few vehicles.
