Outdoor fireplace product safety recall

On March 8, 2011 the Freestanding Steel Outdoor Fireplaces have been jointly recalled with Sunjoy Industries Group Limited, Health Canada, and the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (US CPSC).

This recall involves 'Garden Treasures Living' steel outdoor fireplaces with a bronze finish chimney and slate coloured accents. The wood burning fireplace is approximately 61 centimetres (24 inches) deep by 89 centimetres (35 inches) wide and 145 centimetres (57 inches) tall, has two glass doors and a tile back inside.

The recalled fireplace can be identified by the item number '0027705' and model number 'L-OF082PST-3' that are printed on the front page of the product's instruction manual.

Please note that only the model of 'Garden Treasures Living' outdoor fireplace mentioned above is included in this recall.

What is the danger?

The decorative bronze powder coat finish on the fireplace chimney can ignite during use, posing a fire hazard to consumers.

Sunjoy Industries Group Limited has received 14 reports of the chimney's decorative powder coat finish catching fire in the United States, resulting in one report of melted siding. No injuries have been reported.

At time of the recall Health Canada has not received any reports of incidents or injuries related to the use of these outdoor fireplaces.

What should I do?

Consumers should immediately stop using the fireplace and contact Sunjoy Industries Group Limited to obtain a free replacement chimney and chimney cap.

How many were sold and where?

Approximately 400 units of the recalled outdoor fireplaces were sold in Canada exclusively at Lowe's stores.

In the United States, approximately 20,000 units of the recalled fireplaces were sold exclusively at Lowe's stores.

These recalled products were sold in both Canada and the United States from March 2010 to November 2010. The fireplaces were manufactured in the China. The manufacturer is Sunjoy Industries Group Limited of Steubenville, Ohio.
