GE dehumidifier product safety recall

On July 12, 2011 Health Canada recalled the GE and Professional Series Brand Dehumidifiers.

This recall involves 30-pint and 40-pint portable dehumidifiers manufactured between November 2006 and August 2007, and during April 2008. The dehumidifiers are white with a front-loading water bucket. "GE" or "Professional Series" and digital controls are located on top of the dehumidifier. Model and serial numbers are located on the back of the dehumidifiers.

The following model and serial numbers below are included in this recall and according to MABE Canada Inc., it imported only model AHH40LK into Canada:

GE brand Model AHK30LK, AHW30LK, AHM30LK, AHK40LK, AHH40LK and AHM40LK with serial numbers that begin with VL1, ZL1, AM1, DM1, FM1, GM1, HM1, LM1, MM1 and RM1.

CEM "Professional Series" Model PS78303 with serial numbers from C10102336010841 4100001
to C10102336010841 5103037.

What is the danger?

A component in the dehumidifier's compressor can short circuit, posing a fire hazard to consumers.

Midea and GE have received a total of 14 reports of incidents involving smoke and fumes emitting from the unit and eight reports of fires. In six of the reported fire incidents, property damage extended beyond the unit. No injuries have been reported.

At time of the recall Health Canada has not received any reports of incidents or injuries related to the use of these dehumidifiers.

What should I do?

You should immediately stop using the affected dehumidifiers and contact Midea to determine if their product is included in the recall. If you have an affected dehumidifier then you will be instructed on how to return the product to an authorized service center for a free repair. You should not return the recalled dehumidifiers to the place of purchase.

How many were sold and where?

Approximately 680 units of the affected dehumidifiers were sold at Sam's Club and other retailers across Canada.

The affected dehumidifiers were sold from February 2007 to June 2009. These units were manufactured in China. the manufacturer is GD Midea Air Conditioning Equipment Ltd., of China for GE. The importer is Mabe Canada Inc., of Burlington, Ontario.
