Methanol gel product recall

Elite Foil-Ware 2.5 Hour Methanol Gel by Modern Houseware Imports Inc. recall

September 22, 2010 Health Canada recalled Elite Foil-Ware 2.5 Hour Methanol Gel, used as a fuel for indoor and outdoor heating or cooking. The solid methanol gel is available in a can weighing 200g.

You can identify the product by item number 300800 and UPC 743990300803.

What is the danger?

Health Canada audits products and this process has revealed that the recalled product does not meet the bilingual labelling requirements for consumer chemical products under Canadian law.

The methanol gel lacks the English and French warnings required for toxic and flammable products. In addition, the current hazard labelling is not positioned or sized properly according to the Regulations. These omissions could present a significant risk that may result in serious and irreversible harm.

At the time of the recall neither Modern Houseware Imports Inc. nor Health Canada has received any reports of illnesses or injuries related to the use of this product.

What do I do?

You should immediately stop using the recalled product and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Alternatively, you should dispose of the products as per Municipal Hazardous Waste Guidelines. Consumers may contact their municipality for instructions on how to dispose of gel fuel products.

How many of these were sold and where?

Health Canada is aware of approximately 500 units of the recalled products being distributed by Modern Houseware Imports Inc., a distributor of the recalled fuels located in B.C. These items may have been sold in other provinces across Canada.

The methanol gel products are known to have been sold by Modern Houseware Imports Inc. from May 2010 to August 2010. The products were manufactured in India. the distributor is Modern Housewares Imports Inc. of Burnaby, B.C.
