Manitoba won't pay fines

A recent news release advised that the Manitoba government has decided it will not reimburse people who already paid their tickets for speeding in construction zones when no workers were present.

There had been public pressure on the province to repay the fines because a judge ruled that the signage in construction zones was not correctly placed.

When the judge threw out cases against several people the province decided not to appeal. This effectively ended 850 other pending cases.

When queried, Justice Minister Dave Chomiak said the province is not legally bound to repay those who already paid for tickets they received.

This has become a political issue with The Opposition stating that since the government was in error then people have a right to a refund.
