Insurance companies and privacy

Rising concerns about your privacy and insurance

The number of complaints about privacy issues and the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), in relation to insurance companies is rather alarming.

In the annual report to Parliament, we see that the insurance industry has the second highest number of complaints, at 71 or 17%. In comparison in 2007, only 10% of all complaints registered to PIPEDA, were against the insurance industry.

What are the complaints about? Most either related to difficulties about getting access to your own personal information that is in the hands of the insurance company, or issues in relationship to the disclosure and use of that information. Six out of 10 of all complaints to PIPEDA, were related to the companies and how they collected, used or disclosed your personal information.

It is interesting to note, that the financial Institutions which include financial advisors, banks and collection agencies, received the most complaints against them in 2008. Their total was between 22 and 30%.

Makes one feel a little bit like, "big brother is watching you".
