I am afraid when shopping at the mall

Tips for shopping in person

  • No matter how stressed you are, stay focused about what is going on around you. Be alert as to your surroundings. A thief will be looking for people who are not paying attention.
  • Be sure to shield your personal information number (PIN) when entering it on the pad. This is not an insult to anyone standing near and is a basic precaution.
  • When you are making your payment keep an eye on your credit or debit card. If you have a choice then swipe your own card rather then passing it to a cashier.
  • Do not write down your PIN or your social security number (SIN) and have it in your wallet or purse. A thief is going to look for this information so that they can access your funds. Don't make it easy for them.
  • If your "gut feeling" is that there is something suspicious about an automatic teller machine (ATM) or point of sale (POS) terminal then do not use that machine. You can notify the bank's emergency line or even contact the police.
  • If you are carrying cash then be careful not to "flash" your money around. Be discreet when carrying a large amount and keep your handbag or wallet in your front, not tucked behind you where you cannot see it.
  • Always be sure to keep the car locked and it doesn't hurt to have a dark blanket to drape some of these presents that have spilled over from the trunk. Choose a parking spot that is well lit and ideally has camera surveillance. Do not make it easy on a thief!

Do be aware of the fact that if you do suffer a loss, then your property insurance will respond. Talk to your agent or broker about your policy and what insurance limits you have.
