7 Steps to prevent sewer back up

Insurance advice from SGI Canada on how to prevent sewer back up:

  1. Keep sewer caps on all basement sewer outlets (floor drain, washer tack, sump hole, etc.) during rainstorms.
  2. Install a sump pump and discharge drainage onto your lawn or driveway.
  3. Install a sewer backwater valve.
  4. Disconnect all rainwater downspouts from your basement sewer system and cap disconnected standpipes.
  5. Extend all rainwater downspouts away from the foundation of your home.
  6. Ensure the flow of surface water is directed away from the foundation of your home.
  7. Avoid using water during heavy downpours.
