Hot Wheels for the United States

What vehicle gets stolen the most? The National Insurance Crime Bureau today released Hot Wheels. This is the list of the 10 most stolen vehicles in the United States. For 2010, the most stolen vehicles in the nation were:

  • 1994 Honda Accord
  • 1995 Honda Civic
  • 1991 Toyota Camry
  • 1999 Chevrolet Pickup (Full Size)
  • 1997 Ford F150 Series/Pickup
  • 2004 Dodge Ram
  • 2000 Dodge Caravan
  • 1994 Acura Integra
  • 2002 Ford Explorer
  • 1999 Ford Taurus

Why older vehicles? It is because often they are stolen for parts. What is interesting is that this is the first time since 2002 that domestic vehicles were more popular than foreign brands. Ford took the lead with three spots, Dodge took two and Chevrolet held one. The remaining four spots were Honda, Toyota and Acura.

Does this affect your insurance? You bet it does. The insurance companies will rate these vehicles higher due to the frequency of theft. The owner might not be inclined to add coverage for theft under their Specified Perils or Comprehensive insurance but it appears to be a good bet.

Remember, insurance is there to pay your claims. Be careful when you choose not to buy coverage. You are now making the choice of self insurance. Talk to your agent or broker.
