Manitoba's August hail claims

The hailstorm of August 14 2009 has resulted in Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) receiving about 7,000 claims.

The damages could be as high as $35 million. This brings back memories of the 2007 Dauphin hailstorm which caused damage to 14,000 vehicles and cost $52 million.

The Winnipeg area accounts for about 60% of the recent hail claims.

The insurance answer is that these claims should not affect insurance rates. MPI has filed to keep basic auto insurance rates as they are. They have not requested any general revenue increases for March 1, 2010 which is when the new insurance term begins.
