GM seatbelt safety recall

On October 15 2010 General Motors declared a recall of more than 300,000 Impala sedans because of a concern with the seat belts.

GM will recall approximately 322,409 vehicles from the 2009 and 2010 model years to check. The inspection is for a small number of units where the front seat belt webbing was not properly secured to the lap belt anchor pretensioner. This is mounted to the side of the seat nearest the door.

What is the danger?

GM has said this condition may have an anchor that can separate in a car crash. This condition may not meet the anchor-strength requirements of the U.S. and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard.

What do I do?

Local automobile dealers will inspect both front seat belts and reinstall the anchors if it is necessary. This service will be provided at no charge. You should watch in the mail as to whether or not you need to bring in your vehicle. The recall should be in effect by October 25 2010.
