Food dehydrator recall fire and smoke risk

On February 15, 2011 the NESCO American Harvest Gardenmaster Food Dehydrator has been recalled by Health Canada.

This recall involves the NESCO American Harvest Gardenmaster Food Dehydrator with model number FD-1020. Recalled dehydrators also have one of the following date codes: 09E 0610, 09E 0624 and 09E 0903.

The dehydrator has a base with several stackable trays. The top of the unit houses the electronic control module.

The model number and date code are moulded into the underside of the dehydrator's control module.

What is the danger?

A defective capacitor in the electronic control module could overheat, posing a smoke and fire hazard to consumers.

NESCO received three reports of overheating resulting in smoke or fire, with no reported injuries.

At time of the recall Health Canada has not received any reports of injuries related to the use of these affected products.

What should I do?

You should immediately stop using the recalled dehydrators and contact NESCO for instructions on how to receive a free replacement electronic control module.

How many were sold and where?

Approximately 1,192 affected products were sold at a variety of stores across Canada and online at as well as on other websites.

The affected products were sold from July 2009 to January 2011. These dehydrators were manufactured in China. The manufacturer and importer is The Metal Ware Corporation de Two Rivers, Wisconsin.
