Ethan Allen drop side crib recalled

On November 19, 2010 Health Canada recalled Drop-side Cribs by Ethan Allen.

The cribs come in a variety of colours and can be identified by the following model numbers:

  • 14-5650
  • 15-5650
  • 16-5650
  • 26-5650
  • 35-5622
  • 36-5620
  • 36-5622
  • 38-5622.

The name "Ethan Allen" and the model number are printed on a label on the crib's headboard or footboard.

What is the danger?

The crib's hardware can break or become damaged, causing the drop-side to detach. The danger is if the drop-side detaches, it could create a space between the side of the crib and the mattress. Infants and/or toddlers could roll into this space and fall out of the crib or become trapped, which could lead to suffocation, strangulation or death.

Remember, parents and caregivers should check their baby's drop-side crib regularly. Do not use it if any parts are loose or missing, or if there are any signs of damage to the drop-side hardware. Only parts obtained from the original manufacturer must be used for repairs. Do not repair broken parts with tape, wire, or rope. Contact the manufacturer if replacement parts or additional instructions are needed.

Ethan Allen has received five reports of incidents where the crib's drop-side detached. One child became entrapped, two children fell out of the crib, another child pinched their hand and one child received an unspecified injury.

At time of the recall Health Canada has not received any reports of incidents or injuries to Canadians related to the use of these cribs.

What do I do?

You should carefully examine the drop-side hardware for any signs of damage. If you determine that the drop-side hardware is broken, loose, missing, or deformed, or if there are any other reasons for concern, you should immediately stop using the recalled cribs and find an alternative safe sleeping environment for your baby.

Consumers should not return the crib. Ethan Allen is offering a free repair kit to affected consumers. For more information or to request a repair kit, consumers may contact Ethan Allen at 1-888-339-9398 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit the Ethan Allen website.
