Courtney Love/Twitter Law Suit

If you post something that is defamatory or has infringed someone's copyright then you could find yourself facing a lawsuit for libel. In March, in the United States, the first libel suit against a Twitter user was launched There has also been suits against social network users, message-board posters and bloggers.

The case involves designer Dawn Simorangkir and rock star Courtney Love. Smorangkir bases her case on Love making tweet defamatory comments about her.

You need to be careful what you say and where you say it. There has been a blog lawsuit award as high as $12.5 million USD.

Your personal liability coverage may not cover slander and libel. This may have to be purchased under a commercial general liability policy. Check with your agent or broker to discuss your coverage options. Be aware of the potential risk. The rule of thumb could be, "if your mother was reading this, would she approve?" The old saying of, "if you can't say anything nice then say nothing at all" is quite useful in this scenario.
