Competency of operator

Effective September 15, 2009 under the Canada Shipping Act - Competency of Operators of Pleasure Craft Regulations all persons who operate a pleasure craft that is fitted with a motor must have proof of competency.

Proof of competency means a Pleasure Craft Operator Card, a Boating Safety Course Completion Card, a Rental Boat Safety Checklist, proof of the successful completion of a boating safety course before April 1, 1999 or a certificate or other document pertaining to boating safety knowledge, as required under Section 4 of the Act.

How does this affect insurance?

Check your policy wordings because your insurer is likely to exclude all claims if the watercraft insured is not being operated in accordance with the applicable shipping act.

Talk to your agent or broker if you have questions about your particular policy. Take control of your insurance.
