Common Carrier

Common Carrier is a person or company that transports commodities or goods for compensation and usually for different customers.

This is also known as For-Hire Carrier.

If you are transporting goods or commodities in your truck then you are also referred to as a truckman.

How your insurance will be rated will depend on some of the following criteria:

  • Do you have a designated route or do you go to different spots each day?
  • Do you carry any goods that are hazardous (this would require a placard be on your truck).
  • How far is your radius? How many km will you travel on an average day? How far is your furthest destination? How often do you travel that far?
  • Do you do long-haul? Travel to different provinces? Into the USA?
  • Do you pull a trailer - owned or non-owned?
  • What type of truck or tractor are you using?
  • What is your driving record and the experience and record of any employees?

Talk to your agent or broker about your special needs as a truckman. You want to discuss the possible need for cargo and commercial general liability insurance.

Take control of your insurance. Your agent or broker should be able to shop the markets for you to find you the right package to fit your specific needs. Take control of your insurance.
