Car smoking ban to protect children

Do you smoke in your car? Do you smoke in your car with the children? This is the question being raised in Alberta.

The Canadian Cancer Society is pushing for legislation prohibiting smoking in vehicles carrying children. British Columbia brought in their regulations in 2009 and Saskatchewan followed in 2010. Children will not be exposed to second-hand smoke in vehicles in these provinces.

The children who are exposed to tobacco smoke face an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome, acute respiratory infections, middle ear disease and an increased severity of asthma.

Municipalities can pass their own bylaws against smoking in the vehicle with kids. This was done in Okotoks in 2008 and Leduc has a bylaw coming into effect in July.
