Book Of Business

This is the number, size and type of accounts (policyholders) that an agent or broker controls. This does not mean that the business is necessarily actually owned in whole or in part by the insurance advisor but that this stated advisor has responsibility for the service to these clients. Some brokers do have a percentage share in the business they service.

It is important that you remember that a broker or agent is also a salesperson. They may be under pressure to meet a certain volume in either policy count or premium paid. You should not feel like a commodity as this is more then a business transaction.

Your relationship with your agent or broker needs to be based on trust. You trust that the advice you receive is sound and in your best interest. The broker or agent trusts that you are being forthcoming and has all the information required to do the best job for you.

Talk to your broker or agent. If you have questions, do not be afraid to ask. Your agent or broker wants your loyalty in the way of renewed business and referrals from friends and acquaintances.

Whether it is your auto, home or commercial insurance for your business you need to take control so that you know what you have and why you have it.
