Will it be easier to block Internet porn?

A new web domain has some critics saying that Internet porn is going to be easier to access. Others say the reverse, it will make it easier to block the porn.

Is this a case of the glass being half full or half empty? The negative thought is that the creation of a .xxx suffix for adult-oriented sites will pave the way for an online red light district. The concern is that young people will be drawn into the site and are vulnerable to the effects. There is also a concern that this gives a certain justification to some of the more sordid aspects of the industry.

The board of directors of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) endorsed this concept of creating this adult entertainment .xxx sites at a meeting in Brussels. It is ICM Registry, a Florida-based company that registers domain names that has been seeking this approval since 2004.

The positive side of the question is that if you want to block this from your computer then you can filter out any .xxx websites. It will be easy to do and this should relieve some of the fears that parents will have.

For the adults who enjoy viewing this type of content they will be able to locate it quickly. Perhaps with a better understanding of the reasons why this is so popular there will be less social stigma with the whole process. Pornography has always been a part of society. The issues have always been the mistreatment of the people who work in this industry and illegal aspects.

At time of writing this article there are 110,000 reservations for the sites that will sell for $60 a year. These sites will go live sometime in 2011.
