Bassettbaby drop side crib recall

Bassettbaby drop-side cribs with external plastic hardware were recalled on November 23, 2010 by Health Canada.

These recalled cribs are wood with a metal mattress support and have a drop side with external plastic hardware. The cribs were sold in a variety of finishes.

You identify the crib by a label that is attached to the footboard or headboard with the names "Bassettbaby" or "Bassett Furniture Industries, Inc." as well as the model number, production date and other information. On some of the older models, the manufacturer's name appears on a separate label.

These are the models that have been recalled:

  • Model Number 5960-0604 Cottage Single
  • Model Number 5091-0604 Mission Single
  • Model Number 5765-0504 Woodlands Single
  • Model Number 5093-0621 Cape Cod 4 N 1
  • Model Number 5593-0621 Cape Cod 4 N 1
  • Model Number 5693-0621 Cape Cod 4 N 1
  • Model Number 5893-0621 Cape Cod 4 N 1

What is the danger?

The recalled cribs' drop-side rail can malfunction, detach or otherwise fail, causing part of the drop side to detach from the crib. When the drop-side detaches, it could create a space between the side of the crib and the mattress. Infants and toddlers could roll into this space and become entrapped, which could lead to suffocation or strangulation, or they could fall out of the crib.

At time of the recall in the United States, there are 18 reported incidents in which drop sides malfunctioned or detached from the crib. No injuries were reported. In one of the incidents, a child became entrapped between the mattress and the drop side. In three of the incidents, children fell out of the cribs. The company has also received 154 reports of drop-side hardware breaking during shipment, assembly or use.

In Canada, Health Canada has not received any reports of incidents or injuries related to the use of these cribs.

What do I do?

You should carefully examine the drop-side hardware for any signs of damage. If you see that the drop-side hardware is broken, loose, missing, or deformed, or if there are any other reasons for concern, then you should immediately stop using the recalled cribs and find an alternative safe sleeping environment for their baby.

Do not return the crib. Bassettbaby is offering a free retrofit kit that will immobilize the drop side to affected consumers. Health Canada has not yet assessed the safety of the proposed kits.

For more information, consumers may contact Bassettbaby at 1-800-308-7485 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday or visit the Bassettbaby website.

How many have been sold and where?

An estimated 1,560 of the recalled cribs were sold at children's product stores and other retailers nationwide, and on-line. The recalled products were sold from January 2000 through August 2010.

These cribs were manufactured in China and Vietnam. The manufacturer is Bassett Furniture Industries, Inc., of Bassett, Virginia.
