Manitoba will reduce auto insurance rates

There is good news for drivers in Manitoba. Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) is starting a rating program which will given increased merits for safe drivers. The savings could be almost $1 million dollars.

The program known as "The Driver Safety Rating" (DSR) is in effect March 1, 2010. This is how the program will work:

  • A driver in Manitoba can earn up to 15 merits vs the current 5 merit system for safe driving.
  • A driver can earn one merit for every year of driving with no traffic convictions or at-fault collisions. This is a big improvement from the current system where it takes two years of safe driving to gain one merit point.
  • If a driver has good merit levels then discounts can still be available even when there is an at-fault loss.
  • There is a chance that the best drivers will earn more discounts after reaching the peak record. This has to be approved by the Public Utilities Board.

How will the program be implemented?

It could take up to 14 months but eventually all Manitoba drivers will migrate from the current merit discount program to the DSR. It depends on your anniversary day which is four months after your birthday. All Manitoba drivers should be on the new system by February 28, 2011.

What do the drivers in Manitoba think?

When surveyed 95% of the 'good drivers’ and 84% of the ‘average drivers’ in Manitoba said it was either "important" or "extremely important" to consider a person’s driving history when determining the individual’s insurance rates. This survey was done by MPI.
