Arson is defined as the intentional damaging or destruction by means of fire or explosion of the property of another without the owner’s consent, or of any property with intent to defraud, or attempting the above acts. This is a criminal act.

Many insurance companies will give a reward for providing information that results in the arrest of a person or persons committing arson.

If you commit arson then you cannot profit from your act. If you burn down your building you will not be paid in a claim. In this situation where you have committed arson and there is a mortgage on the building the mortgagee would still be able to present a claim to the insurer.
