How to reduce your risk of breast cancer

You probably can guess and you would be right. The top three ways to reduce breast cancer are:

  • Limit your alcohol consumption. Having a little alcohol is a good thing. Over-indulging has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer.
  • Watch your waistline. Keep your weight at a healthy level as obesity is linked to a number of cancers.
  • Exercise. A 20 minute a day exercise routine will give you the minimum amount of protection you will need. Fitness is important.


Other steps that you can take that will also help reduce risk include:

  • Make sure to avoid unnecessary radiation exposure such as a CT scan.
  • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) helps a woman to look and feel younger. As tempting as that may be, avoid or limit use of HRT. Long-term use has been linked to ovarian and breast cancer.
  • Start your family before age 30.
  • Breast-feed your babies as long as possible.


Some of these activities, such as exercise can be of even greater impact if you extend that minimum 20 minutes a day to 45 or 60 minutes. If you have a family history of breast cancer then you certainly want to consider implementing these non-invasive measures.
